Next week is ........... NZ Seaweek (1 March - 9 March)

                                                              https://seaweek.org.nz/

Next week is NZ seaweek.  There are a few books for you all to explore and connect to the sea around NZ.

Celia Seagull and the Plastic Sea

Celia Seagull rather likes plastic, and busily uses it to build herself a bigger and better next.  But while she's busily building, she realises that the plastic floating in the ocean can be hazard for sea creatures.  Celia also learns just how important it is to help others. The messages of conservation and kindness are such important ones that the book has been endorsed by Jane Goodall.

Kaewa the Kororā

When Kaewa the kororā is injured she is taken to the National Aquarium of New Zealand. Kind old Captain looks after her as she settles in with the crew at Penguin Cove. The Penguins seems friendly, but who keeps knocking her over?  There's one kororā she's yet to meet, and when they collide it ends in a SPLASH!......

Wild Coasts, Exploring Aotearoa's Marine Reserves

Full of fascinating information and beautiful illustrations of sea life, Wild Coasts is an inspiring tribute to Aotearoa's marine reserves.

There are now 44 of these special safe zones in New Zealand, created to protect our marine ecosystems, and in this book, Ned Barraud explores six of these in more detail.

This is a deep dive into the spectacular world of our wild coasts and will be treasured by all young people who are interested in our ocean environment.

Whiti Colossal Squid of the Deep

The colossal squid has been the most popular exhibit at Te Papa since she arrived there in 2007.  Now this appealing book for young readers tells the fascinating story of Whiti, one of these great creatures from the deep.

Journey to the icy waters of the Ross Sea in Antarctica and descend into Whiti's dark underwater world.  Learn more about colossal squid and the plants and animals that live beneath the ice, and follow Whiti as she grows from newborn squid to massive queen of the depths.

The eight gifts of Te Wheke

Te Wheke the octopus loves to collect things - pirate coins, glossy pearls, sparkly lamps, old toys, broken toasters.  But one day, he wants to get eight treasures all at once, and that gets him into trouble.

and many more books......

Lunchtime Quiz Fun - Wednesdays in Homeroom 2

 Lit Quiz Club

Come along for some fun quizzes and team work -
Each year, Whakarongo School enters 2 teams into the Manawatu Lit (Literacy) Quiz Competition.  Ask anyone who has been about the fun of the day and event - and amazing set up for the competition.
You DO NOT have to read a wide range of books to come along to the club but it does help if you have a book genre or series passion area and are open to exploring more.
Open to year 5-8 students - any questions or queries then come along and see Pou Gwen in Tautoko Pod.
(currently held on Wednesday lunchtimes in Homeroom 2).
We also are entering the Manawatu Literacy Society BOOK BATTLE to be held in Term 2 - more information to come!
